20,000+ Artworks Annually, Zero Friction: How we transformed Michaels’ Private Brand packaging process

When Michaels needed to transform how they managed over 20,000 multilingual packaging artworks each year, our team at JPG brought structure, speed and scalability to a complex global operation.

 

The challenge

Michaels manages in excess of 20,000 multilingual packaging artworks per year, and when we first started working with them they were managing multilingual artworks across a global supply chain through compressed deadlines and manual, fragmented processes.

This was all being executed using email, Excel spreadsheets and hard copy print outs.

 

 

The goals 

The objective was to not only position ourselves to manage high volumes, but also introduce a digitally connected, scalable workflow that could effectively engage stakeholders across multiple regions and time zones while ensuring brand consistency and improving speed to market to support rapid product launches.

Our approach

  • Embedded an integrated client service team: We placed a dedicated onsite team within Michaels’ Private Brand packaging department in their head office in Dallas, working seamlessly with our global production studios to manage the full packaging lifecycle, from project planning to supplier coordination and full packaging production services.

 

  • Implemented a connected technology ecosystem: Deployed content management and automated workflow platforms to centralise content collection, translations, and artwork approvals, eliminating data entry duplication and improving speed to market.

 

Through the innovation applied by our “people, process, technology” approach, Michaels achieved faster, more accurate and more efficient Private Brand packaging design and artwork operations:

  • 40% faster artwork approvals - production and approvals accelerated by two full weeks.

 

  • Elimination of cumbersome manual processes - content collection, translation and artwork approvals automated through task driven workflows to remove duplication and minimise human error.
